Vijay Ramani, PhD, has been named to Forbes magazine’s annual 30 Under 30 list of rising stars in healthcare.
He is featured for co-inventing sci-Plex, a new technique that enables high-throughput chemical screening using single-cell RNA-sequencing as a read-out. This work, co-led with joint first-authors Sanjay Srivatsan and José McFaline-Figueroa, PhD, at the University of Washington, was published recently in Science.
Ramani joined UC San Francisco as a Sandler Fellow in 2018. His lab develops novel molecular technologies to understand the regulation of biology’s central dogma – that is, the transfer of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein. Ramani and his team are particularly interested in devising ways to molecularly tag nucleic acids and proteins with unique genomic or proteomic identifiers and then using these “barcodes” to quantify biological phenomena on the level of single cells and single molecules. They then apply these methods to study regulatory circuits linking cellular metabolism, nuclear chromatin structure, and transcriptional output.
Prior to coming to UCSF, Ramani completed his PhD in genome sciences in the lab of Jay Shendure, MD, PhD, at the University of Washington.
